Paul Smith Spring ang Summer 2027 Men’s Collection
Milan : Titled Suits in Unsuitable Situations, Paul Smith presented the Spring/Summer 2027 men’s collection in an intimate, salon-style show.
A lifelong wearer of suits on a daily basis, Paul loves the combination of function and elegance that’s unique to perfectly constructed tailoring. Paul recalls family holidays with his grandfather standing knee-deep in the sea, dressed in a full suit and tie with rolled-up trousers. Years later, wearing a crisp white linen suit on his way to the airport in Tuscany, Paul found himself helping a local farmer transport freshly harvested grapes, leaving the suit permanently stained in rich burgundy. Inspired by these experiences, the collection considers tailoring not as something static, but as garments to be worn that develop character over time.
Led by Design Directors Helen Holmes and Sam Cotton, Paul Smith’s archive is revisited with fresh eyes. In the Eighties, Paul was a critical part of a movement that softened tailoring and gave levity to what had previously been uniform and rigid. That history of subverting sartorial codes is reenergised this season, where cuffs are turned back, ties are loosened and shirts unbuttoned, ready to face the heat.
Cloths including a tropical weave made in Scotland, a mouliné seersucker and a printed silk habutai bring a fluid elegance. In unlined tailoring and soft silhouettes, there’s a wornin quality, whilst within garments a world of detail is revealed: hand-worked pad stitching, flower loops and collar meltons are all highlighted in contrasting colours.
Collisions of opposites – crisp with crushed, bright white with dark tones – form the foundation of this collection. Amidst the shades of ecru and taupe, punctuation marks of colour are delivered in mint green summer knits, printed silk ties and, of course, socks in lemon and grape. Midnight navy formalwear brings rare colour to an area of tailoring more often dominated by black.
A hand-painted pebble was left as a keepsake on each guest’s seat, a small gesture that points to the beauty in everyday objects. Throughout the collection, charms cast in pewter and brass – sailing boats, seashells and pennies – add a touch of nostalgia and fun. Much like Paul’s grandfather, Paul Smith’s approach to tailoring has an ease and playfulness that stands the test of time.
